WestJet Data Breach Exposes Customer Personal Information

Pittman, Dutton, Hellums, Bradley & Mann, P.C. is investigating a data breach involving WestJet Airlines, which recently confirmed that an unauthorized third party gained access to its network, exposing sensitive customer information.

What Happened?

On June 13, 2025, WestJet’s security team identified suspicious activity on its internal systems. An investigation, conducted with the assistance of external cybersecurity experts, revealed that a sophisticated criminal group had accessed parts of the company’s network.

WestJet immediately locked down its systems, isolated affected servers, and implemented additional security measures. By September 15, 2025, the airline confirmed that personal information belonging to U.S. and Canadian customers had been compromised. Notification letters were then sent to impacted individuals.

What Information Was Exposed?

The types of data exposed vary by individual but may include:

  • Full name and date of birth
  • Mailing address
  • Travel document details (passport number or other government-issued ID)
  • Travel-related preferences and requests
  • Complaint records filed with WestJet
  • WestJet Rewards account information (Rewards ID, points total)
  • Certain credit card identifiers tied to WestJet RBC Mastercard accounts

WestJet confirmed that no financial account data, credit card numbers, or passwords were compromised. The airline also emphasized that flight operations and passenger safety were not at risk.

WestJet’s Response

To protect affected individuals, WestJet is offering:

  • Complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection
  • Guidance on spotting and reporting suspicious activity
  • Enhanced cybersecurity protocols, including additional monitoring and encryption

The company has also committed to ongoing audits to ensure no further unauthorized access occurs.
