Pittman, Dutton, Hellums, Bradley & Mann, P.C. is investigating a major data breach involving Globe Life Insurance and its subsidiary, American Income Life Insurance Company. The breach may have exposed the personal information of roughly 850,000 people, including customers and individuals who requested insurance quotes.
According to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Globe Life became aware of the incident after a cybercriminal attempted to extort the company, threatening to release stolen data unless a ransom was paid. Globe Life later confirmed that information was likely removed from databases maintained by certain independent agency owners.
Originally, the company estimated that around 5,000 individuals were affected. However, after continuing its investigation, Globe Life determined that personal information belonging to an additional 850,000 people had been stored in the same compromised databases. It has not confirmed whether all of that data was taken, but the insurer chose to notify those individuals out of caution.
Data that may have been accessed includes:
The company said that banking information, credit card data, and other direct financial account information were not involved.
Globe Life reported that the extortion attempt did not involve ransomware and did not disrupt business operations. The insurer has notified regulators and law enforcement and is seeking reimbursement from its own cyber insurance policies for costs related to the breach.
Globe Life has begun notifying affected individuals and is offering complimentary credit monitoring services to those whose data may have been involved.
If you received a notice that your personal information may have been part of the Globe Life data breach, you may be entitled to compensation. Victims of data theft often face long-term risks, including identity fraud, unauthorized accounts, medical identity theft, and ongoing misuse of personal information.
