Delta Dental of Virginia Data Breach Under Investigation

Pittman, Dutton, Hellums, Bradley & Mann, P.C. is reviewing reports of a significant data security incident involving Delta Dental of Virginia that may have exposed the personal and protected health information of nearly 146,000 individuals.

Overview of the Data Breach

Delta Dental of Virginia, a major dental benefits provider serving the Commonwealth, began notifying members on November 21, 2025, after determining that an employee email account had been accessed by an unauthorized party. The investigation found that the account was compromised as early as March 21, 2025, and remained vulnerable until April 23, 2025, when suspicious activity was detected and the account was secured.

During the period of unauthorized access, emails and attachments containing sensitive information may have been viewed or obtained by the intruder.

Information Potentially Exposed

Delta Dental’s review of the compromised account revealed that the information involved differs from person to person. However, the types of data that may have been accessed include:

  • Names
  • Social Security numbers
  • Driver’s license numbers or other government ID numbers
  • Financial information
  • Medical and health insurance information

Exposure of this information places individuals at risk of identity theft, insurance fraud, and other forms of misuse.

Delta Dental’s Response

Following the discovery of the breach, Delta Dental worked with outside cybersecurity specialists to investigate the incident, identify the scope of the compromised data, and implement security improvements. The organization has since added stronger email security controls and provided additional cybersecurity training to employees.

Affected individuals whose Social Security numbers or driver’s license numbers may have been compromised are being offered complimentary credit monitoring, dark web surveillance, and identity theft protection for 12 months. These services include access to identity restoration support and reimbursement insurance of up to $1 million.

What This Means for Consumers

For many victims, the effects of data theft can extend well beyond the initial incident. Stolen personal and health information can be used to open fraudulent accounts, file false insurance claims, or commit medical identity fraud—problems that can take months or even years to unravel.

Individuals notified about this breach should take steps to protect themselves, such as watching their financial accounts, reviewing insurance statements, and monitoring their credit reports for unfamiliar activity. Enrolling in the complimentary protection services offered by Delta Dental may also help detect early signs of misuse.
