Pittman, Dutton, Hellums, Bradley & Mann, P.C. is investigating a data breach involving Carter Credit Union, which may have exposed the personal, financial, and limited medical information of its members.
Carter Credit Union discovered that an unauthorized third party had temporarily gained access to its network. Upon detection, Carter immediately took steps to contain the incident, engaged a forensic security firm, and notified law enforcement. The investigation concluded that the attacker accessed certain files on the credit union’s systems. After reviewing the compromised files, Carter determined that they contained the personal information of certain individuals.
The information involved varies by individual but may include:
Carter Credit Union has begun mailing notification letters to affected members and is offering complimentary identity theft protection services to individuals whose Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, or passport numbers were involved. The services include credit monitoring and identity theft resolution support.
The credit union stated that it has not seen evidence of misuse of the exposed data but is encouraging members to remain vigilant. Carter recommends monitoring account statements, reviewing credit reports, and reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement or the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov/idtheft or 1-877-438-4338.
