Aspire Rural Health System Data Breach

Aspire Rural Health System Data Breach Impacts More Than 138,000 Patients and Employees

Pittman, Dutton, Hellums, Bradley & Mann, P.C. is investigating a major data breach involving Aspire Rural Health System, which serves patients throughout Michigan’s Thumb region. The breach exposed sensitive personal, financial, and medical information belonging to at least 138,386 individuals across Aspire’s healthcare facilities.

What Happened In The Aspire Rural Health System Data Breach?

According to public reports, Aspire Rural Health System experienced unauthorized access to its network between November 4, 2024, and January 6, 2025. The incident was the result of a ransomware attack carried out by the BianLian cybercriminal group, which publicly claimed responsibility on February 13, 2025 via a posting on the dark web.

Aspire completed a review of the compromised data on July 18, 2025 and began mailing notification letters to patients and staff on August 20, 2025. The organization also reported the incident to the Maine Attorney General’s Office on August 21, 2025.

What Information Was Exposed?

The review confirmed that both personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI) were compromised. The stolen data may include:

  • Names and dates of birth
  • Social Security numbers
  • Financial account and routing numbers
  • Payment card numbers, PINs, and expiration dates
  • Medical diagnoses and treatment details
  • Prescription information
  • Lab results
  • Health insurance information
  • Patient identification and medical record numbers
  • Provider information
  • Driver’s license and passport numbers
  • Usernames, passwords, and biometric identifiers

The scope and sensitivity of the exposed information make this breach especially serious, as it combines financial, identity, and detailed medical records for over 100,000 individuals.
